Nearby cannot find my Mac

Keep both devices on the same reachable network. Check iPhone Local Network permission and Remote Login on the Mac. Guest Wi-Fi may isolate devices. Try adding the Mac’s current address manually.

Password or key rejected

Use the short username and Mac account password, rather than an Apple Account email. Check that Remote Login allows that account. For SSH keys, check the selected key and the Mac’s authorized public key.

Connection times out

Check that the Mac is awake, its address is current, and the SSH port is reachable. Firewalls and isolated networks can block access.

Monitoring or file actions fail

Check Python from an SSH session, replacing the placeholders with your account and Mac address:

From another computer
ssh username@mac-address 'python3 --version'

Check the account’s permissions for the affected path or operation.

Access away from home

MARC has no built-in internet relay. Your iPhone needs a secure network route to the Mac, such as a VPN you configure separately.

Include the MARC build, iOS/macOS versions, expected behavior, actual behavior, and reproduction steps. Remove passwords, private keys, API keys, and sensitive details from screenshots and logs.

Work out which part is failing

  1. No Mac found: check discovery, Local Network permission, and network isolation.
  2. Connection times out: check the address, port, firewall, and whether the Mac is awake.
  3. Login rejected: check the short username, account password, or SSH key.
  4. Connected, but a feature fails: check Python, permissions, helpers, and hardware support.

Try one change at a time. It is easier to understand what fixed the problem when several settings have not changed together.

The host fingerprint changed

This can happen after a Mac is reinstalled or its SSH host keys are replaced, but it can also mean you reached a different machine.

Compare the new fingerprint directly on the intended Mac. Do not forget a saved fingerprint simply to clear the warning.

What to include when asking for help

A useful report describes the task, the steps you took, what you expected, and what happened instead. Add the MARC build and your iOS and macOS versions.

If there is an error message, include its wording. Say whether the failure happens on the same network, through a VPN, or only with one feature.
