Browse and preview

Open Files and navigate to a folder. Use the item’s actions menu for supported operations such as preview, download, rename, move, permissions, copying a path, or deletion.

Upload and download

Upload from the iPhone picker or download a file from your Mac. Watch the transfer progress and wait for completion. Replacing an existing file requires confirmation.

Understand local copies

Previewing or downloading creates a temporary copy on iPhone. Exporting or sharing can create an additional copy in the destination you choose. Changing a preview does not automatically edit the original Mac file.

Preview, edit, or download—which should I use?
  • Preview: inspect the file without saving edits back to the Mac.
  • View and edit: change supported text files, then choose Save to write the changes back.
  • Download: get a copy you can export or open in another app.

Editing or deleting an exported copy does not automatically change the original file on your Mac.

Permissions and destructive actions

File operations use your SSH account’s access rights. Test permission changes, deletion, and replacement with disposable files first. Check the selected path before confirming.

Previewing and editing are different

Preview lets you inspect a file. It does not automatically save changes back to the Mac.

For supported files, the actions panel offers View and edit. The current build supports UTF-8 text files up to 1 MB. Open the editor, make your changes, and choose Save to write them back to the Mac.

If editing is unavailable, check the explanation in the panel. The file may be too large, use an unsupported format, or be inaccessible to your account.

Rename or move an item

Open the item’s actions and choose Rename or move. Rename changes its name in the current folder. Move changes its location; include the final item name in the destination path.

Existing destination items are not overwritten by this action. If a move fails, check the destination and the account’s access to both folders.

Understand permission changes

Read permission allows access to content, write permission allows changes, and execute permission allows running a file. For a folder, execute permission allows traversal through it.

MARC shows the owner, group, and permission information in the details panel. Permission changes apply to the selected item; they do not recursively change everything inside a folder.

Change only the access you need. A permission error can also involve a parent folder or macOS privacy restrictions.

Folders, transfers, and deletion

Downloading a folder creates a .tar.gz archive. Sharing a file or folder downloads it before opening the destination picker.

Deletion permanently removes the selected item. Deleting a folder also removes its contents. Do not assume the item will be available in the Mac’s Trash afterward.

Before replacing or deleting anything important, check the full path and keep a separate backup.
